The gaming techs at Sony came up with a new feature for the PlayStation that will make the gaming experience more interactive and fun! PlayStation Party chat allows you to directly talk to the other gamers playing in your game.
This feature provides a seamless connection between all gamers, logged into a game, irrespective of their location. Since all conservations take place over voice communication, you do not have to stop mid-game to type a message in the chatbox.
You can simply speak to other gamers while playing your game. This reduces any disruptions in the game and allows you to fully enjoy the gaming experience with other players logged in. This comes especially in handy when you are involved in a multiplayer game where you need to discuss strategy and thoughts mid-game with your team players.
While this all sounds amazing, you should be aware of the fact that this feature is only limited to PS4 and PS5 gaming consoles. This is not a standalone app. You will need the PS4 or PS5 consoles to operate PlayStation Party Chat. So if you have any of the older consoles then you will not be able to reap the benefits of this.
However, PlayStation Party Chat is available on other smart devices, in case you do not have the PS4 or PS5 consoles.
PlayStation Party Chat on Other Platforms
If you wish to avail the benefits of the ultimate gaming experience that PlayStation Party chat provides but you do not have the PS4 or PS5 gaming console, then not to worry! There are other ways you can enjoy this feature without PS4 or PS5 consoles.
Firstly, running PlayStation Party Chat on your PC is a completely viable option. If you are worried that this feature will not perform as smoothly on the PC as it does on PS4 or PS5 consoles, then you will be surprised to know that, in fact, this feature is more convenient when streaming it to your PC, than to a PS4 or PS5.
Secondly, both Android and iOS support PlayStation Party Chat. You can easily access the feature on any smartphone or tablet with such operating systems. If you are concerned about the practical application of the PlayStation Party chat on Portable smart devices then you will be relieved to hear that the feature on smart devices operates similarly to that on PC.
However, there is one catch. The feature will only work on Android versions 7.0 or above. While in devices with iOS, the feature will only work on versions 12.1 or above.
Is PS4 party chat private?
Previously, party chats on PS4 were private. This meant that no one would be able to enter into your chat unless you gave them permission. However, after the 8.00 update, things went very wrong and private chats became non-existent.
After the update, Sony linked the messaging system with party functionality to, essentially, make sending off numerous party invites at once, easier.
Before the 8.00 update, you could start a party by opening up your friend’s list and sending invites to your friends. You could simply list the party as public and players would be able to join by themselves. But now you would have to repeat the process over and over again every time a new player wants to join.
Now, you can only invite users from pre-formed message groups. If you try to change the list of players in your chat then the system becomes sluggish, unappealing, and complicated. The worst part is that private parties don’t even seem to be a thing anymore.
This has caused quite a stir in the gaming community and many gamers have appealed and advocated for the previous system to be reinforced. So until that happens, private chats on PS4 will not be possible.
How can you tell who is at a party on PS4?
If you create a party chat then obviously you know exactly who is in the chat as you have to send invites and approve entry. You can invite exactly 16 players into one chat.
However, if you are asked to join a party then you can still find out who else is in the party. Follow the straightforward steps in order to find the list of party members:
- First, select the headphone icon from the function screen to view a list of the parties you can join
- Second, select the party you want to join and enter it
- Press the triangle button on your controller to view the list of players in the current party
This procedure is applicable to every party you are invited to. So, if ever you are curious about who you have been invited to play with then you can use this quick and easy method to find out exactly who you are interacting within the gaming universe.
You should also know that while voice chatting with other gamers in the party, you can each play the same game, or enable ‘Share Play’ to share your screen and enjoy the game together.

If you are a dedicated gamer then this is definitely the feature for you. However, you should know that if you stream this feature on any other device besides your PS4 or PS5 console then you can expect the load on the device to increase, the quality to diminish, and the system to lag.
